The New FSRU Vessel of BOTAŞ: Ertuğrul Gazi

The final stage has been reached in Türkiye's new FSRU vessel "Ertuğrul Gazi", one of the largest investments of BOTAŞ.

In his speech, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Fatih Dönmez, expressed that they devoted themselves for Türkiye to be independent in all fields, and said “We will continue to walk on the right path for independence in economy, diplomacy, security and most importantly, energy.

Dönmez continued his words stating that Türkiye’s natural gas storage capacity has recently been significantly improved with new underground natural gas storage, LNG and FSRU facilities. The Minister also shared a news about the FSRU, the construction of which had started two years ago with the instruction of the President, that the vessel would arrive in Türkiye by the end of the year. The FSRU, named “Ertuğrul Gazi” by the President, is still being tested at present. Once the testing process is finished, it will head for Türkiye. Currently, there are two FSRUs in the country, one in Hatay, and the other in İzmir; the one in İzmir belongs to a private Turkish company. The ownership of the new FSRU to arrive by the end of the year will belong to BOTAŞ, and the existing rented one will be returned. Ertuğrul Gazi Floating Storage and Regasification Unit is expected to be connected to the facilities at Hatay by the new year and come on stream. The vessel has a LNG storage capacity of 170 thousand cubic meters, which equals to 102 million cubic meters in gas form. It has a regasification capacity of 28 million per day. Thanks to the FSRUs, Türkiye will now be able to supply gas from different source countries or spot market, without being constrained only by pipelines. New entry points to the transmission system, close to consumption centers, will be created by minimizing investment and transportation costs in gas transmission and distribution. Accordingly, seasonal fluctuations in peak consumption times, especially in winter, and interruptions due to technical or geopolitical risks will be prevented. Ertuğrul Gazi FSRU vessel will bring significant flexibility to Türkiye’s natural gas supply security."
