A New Record in Natural Gas Consumption

BOTAŞ continues to meet the increasing natural gas consumption due to both the increasing residential energy consumption during the pandemic and the difficult winter months. Previous records were broken with 245 million cubic meters on January 8, 2019, and 272.3 million cubic meters of natural gas per day on January 18, 2021. With the impact of cold weather throughout the country, the record levels were reached yesterday in Türkiye's natural gas consumption. On January 19, 2021, the daily natural gas demand of 280 million cubic meters was met without any problems, breaking the all-time record.

With the daily consumption of 280 million cubic meters of natural gas met on January 19, 2021, an increase of 3% compared to the daily natural gas consumption of 272 million cubic meters on January 18, 2021, and an increase of 14.2% compared to the previous record of 245 million cubic meters of natural gas consumption on January 08, 2019 was recorded.

The highest record consumption by provinces on January 19, 2021 was as follows:

1) İstanbul 51.6 million m³

2) Ankara 23.9 million m³

3) İzmir 13.9 million m³

4) Bursa 10 million m³

The previous record consumption on the basis of provinces was as follows: Istanbul – 51.1 million m3, Ankara – 22.7 million m3 and Bursa – 9.6 million m3.

In addition to the ensuring the security of energy supply with the steps taken by BOTAŞ, the leader of the natural gas industry of our country, Türkiye has no problems in natural gas supply thanks to the recently made natural gas storage, FSRU and LNG investments and international projects such as TANAP and TurkStream.

With LNG, FSRU and storage projects, in order to ensure our natural gas supply security, the daily gas flow that can be supplied to the system was increased to 339 million cubic meters.

In line with the 2023 targets of our country, our Tuz Gölü Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility will be the largest storage facility in the world in salt storages, with the target of 5.4 billion m3 storage and 80 million m3 withdrawal capacity.

How Did 2020 Go?

The total amount of natural gas entered Türkiye’s system in 2020 increased by 6.75 percent compared to the previous year and reached to 50 billion cubic meters. January was the month the highest quantity of natural gas entered the country, approximately 7 billion cubic meters.

As of today, 81 provinces and 589 residential areas have been supplied with natural gas in Türkiye.  With the expansion works carried out by BOTAŞ, EMRA and distribution companies under the coordination of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, approximately 70 million citizens have reached the comfort of natural gas usage with a total of 17 million 500 thousand subscribers.
